Ocean King – Fisherman’s tips to get you really hooked

  • Ocean King products are cooked in the can and only require reheating. Add canned fish towards the end of the cooking process to avoid overcooking.
  • Ocean King canned fish products contain no preservatives.  It is the canning process itself that preserves the food.
  • Ocean King Portuguese Sardines contain bones which are soft and totally digestible. These bones are a good source of calcium and do not need to be thrown away.
  • Ocean King Portuguese Sardines are also cooked with their scales on – these scales are extremely soft and thin, and are meant to be eaten. It is a unique characteristic of this specific fish species that adds to its world-renowned flavor.
  • Goodness in a can – the entire contents of Ocean King canned food products should be viewed as a whole and you should use the liquid/sauce in your cooking to enhance flavour. For example, frying onions at the start of a recipe with the oil decanted from an opened can of sardines in sunflower oil will add an unbeatable richness of flavour to your pot.
  • Because canned foods have been heat-sterilized and are protected from contamination by the sealed container, they keep for a long time. Always check expiry dates before purchasing and consuming food products. Secret tip : Portuguese Sardines mature in the can and their flavour becomes stronger through the years. The best Portuguese Sardines with chilli peppers are the oldest – and hottest!
  • Rub your hands with a cut lemon before working with fish and any smell will wash off easily.
  • Always remember that canned foods have no preservatives, so once opened, treat them as you would fresh food.
  • Store all canned foods in cool, dry conditions. Never eat from cans that have any dents crossing a seam line as the dents may have exposed the weaker seams to air, potentially exposing the products to contamination.
  • Wash and dry your can opener after use to avoid contaminating your food with bacteria.
  • Leftover canned fish should be stored in the refrigerator in a sealed glass or plastic container.
